Most aftercare creams are fine on most people most of the time. But if you have eczema, allergies to fragrances or essential oils, or a history of reacting to skincare, do this BEFORE your tattoo session.
The 48-hour patch test
- Pick a soft skin area: inside your wrist or the inside of your elbow.
- Apply a pea-sized amount of the aftercare cream — InkLube or whatever you plan to use.
- Cover with a small bandage if you’ll wash the area before 48 hours pass.
- Wait. Don’t reapply. Don’t wash for 24 hours.
- Check at 24 hours and 48 hours. Look for redness, bumps, itching, swelling.
What to do if you react
Stop. Wash gently. Don’t use it on a fresh tattoo. Try a simpler formula or talk to your dermatologist about a fragrance-free, essential-oil-free option.
What to do if you don’t react
You’re clear. Bring the same jar to your tattoo session and use it on schedule starting day 2 or 3.
InkLube has lavender and tea tree, which are essential oils. They’re common in skincare and most people are fine with them — but if you’re sensitive, the patch test is non-negotiable.
